Topalov wins Villarrobledo Chess Festival

After round 7 Mamedyarov was alone at the top, as Ponomariov and Topalov finished draw. However, in round 8 the Azeri player finished draw with Shirov and the victory of Topalov against Paunovic put him first on tiebreak. The last round victory of the ex world champion and the draw by Mamedyarov, left Topalov as the sole winner of the competition.

World Junior Chess Championship U20 pairings round 1

The pairings for round 1 of the World Junior Chess Championship U20 are already known. The top seeded GM Rauf Mamedov will have a difficult opponent – IM Pandian Karthiekeyan. Similar draw have GM Rodshtein, GM Andreikin, and GM Laznicka who will face IM Kore, FM Benidze, and FM Narmontas.

Arctic Chess Challenge Started on Saturday

The 3rd Arctic Chess Challenge, that will take place on 2-10 August in Tromso (Norway), has launched today with 90 participants. This event is very important for the local chess community in their attempt to host the 2014 Chess Olympiad. There were no surprises in the first round as all top seeded players won their games.
