Two top seeded players, GM Mark Bluvshtein and young GM Anton Kovalyov, are leading with perfect score after four rounds. Third is one of the well known Quebec players, the ultra-solid FM Sylvain Barbeau. Other top rated participants, including Grandmasters Sambuev and Bhat, are having difficult time in the tournament and are contained to 50% score.

Teimour Radjabov Scores First Win in Bazna Kings

The third Bazna Kings Tournament is taking place on 14-25th June in Bucharest and Bazna. After six consecutive draws, Teimour Radjabov dismantled Gata Kamsky’s Caro-Kann to sign his first win in this event. On the other board, Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu tried everything possible to break that annoying Petroff defence, but Boris Gelfand comfortably defended and walked away with a draw…

The tournament has an international taste this year with the inclusion of four Grandmasters from different countries. The 10-player round robin competition will serve as a qualifier for the Montreal International Chess tournament to be held later in August. The best four will play in the Montreal International, while the best placed local player will be crowned Quebec Chess Champion.

Vassily Ivanchuk Grabs Sole Lead in Bazna Kings

Vassily Ivanchuk emerged as sole leader after his second consecutive win. His opponent Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu looked good to solve all the opening problems and coordinate the pieces, until hidden weakness of the back rank suddenly got exposed by Ivanchuk’s 24. g4. Nisipeanu then immediately resigned.

The final result was draw and Adams finished second with 4.5 points.

Bazna Kings – Ivanchuk and Gelfand Surge Forward

Bazna Kings – Ivanchuk and Gelfand Surge Forward

Boris Gelfand opened with Queen’s Indian defence as black and Alexei Shirov chose nowadays popular sideline in the fianchetto variation – 5. Qb3. Gelfand already has experience in this line, having defended it against Loek Van Wely in Melodi Amber rapid. Shirov’s 16. Bd1!?, and particularly 18. Rb1?!, looked awkward, and white simply lost a pawn…

Bazna Kings, All Draws in Rounds 3-4

Radjabov-Shirov was interesting as Azeri Grandmaster was pressing in the Gruenfeld Indian defence, but it appears that he missed a transposition to a winning pawn endgame and had to accept a draw. Another interesting struggle in Gruenfeld Indian was Gelfand-Kamsky from round four. Kamsky is feeling very confident in these waters with plenty of preparation left out from his match with Topalov…

Shirov-Ivanchuk has been particularly interesting, with all the neat tactics and pieces hanging around. It all went down to a Rook endgame which Ivanchuk played brilliantly to reach a theoretical “king to the short side” draw. Ivanchuk, Shirov and Gelfand are currently sharing the lead with 1.5 points each. Radjabov has one, Kamsky half a point, while Nisipeanu is without points.
