The fighting trend from the earlier days of the Magistral Casino de Barcelona 2010 round robin tournament continued in round six when four games ended in decisive results and only one was drawn. Grandmasters Ivan Salgado Lopez and Lazaro Bruzon are rushing towards the first place, widening the point gap ahead of the rest of the field.

GM Ivan Salgado Lopez suffered a defeat in the opening round, but then he tallied four consecutive victories, to overtake the first place from Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista. Replay the games bellow. In general, the tournament is very attractive with a large number of decided games. Grandmaster Hess is also without draws, while Inarkiev, Edouard and Magem have only one draw each.

In round four Grandmaster Kovacevic defeated Vladislav Nevednichy, the then joint leader and his team-mate from Novosadski chess club, and occuppied the first place. As all round five games finished in draws, Kovacevic remained on the top, full point clear of the opposition.

Last round of the World Senior Chess Championship 2010 Open was also dramatic. The three leaders from the penultimate round could not win, as GM Vlastimil Jansa and GM Viacheslav Dydyshko drew on the top board and IM Anatoli Shvedchikov was defeated, thus allowing GM Larry Kaufman (2008 World Senior Champion) and GM Anatoly Vaisser to catch up on the top positions.

Thanks to the draws on top nine tables in the last round, Azerbaijan champion Eltaj Safarli maintained the leading margin acquired in round seven and celebrated a clear first place in the tournament.

In the derby match of the first round, Russian GM Ernesto Inarkiev defeated French star Romain Edouard with black pieces. Top-seeded Lazaro Bruzon and local GM Oms Pallisse were also successful with black, taking victories against Ivan Salgado and Robert Hess respectively. The other two games were drawn.

Corsica, famous for being the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte, is also famous for being the land of chess. L’île de beauté (Isle of beauty) was again a host to a powerful event. The 14th “Corsican Circuit” was held in Bastia and Aiacciu from October 24th to November 1st 2010.
