Local favourite and national champion Parimarjan Negi defeated International Master Rahul Sangma in the sixth round to emerge as the sole leader in the 9th Parsvnath International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Ludlow Castle here on Tuesday. With his sixth victory on the trot, Negi remains the only player in the field to have won all his matches in the tournament so far.

The defending champion GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami was trailing behind GM Elshan Moradiabadi and IM Pouria Darini in the first half of the tournament, but then he grabbed the lead in the 8th round and maintained the top position until the end of the race. Ghaem Maghami earned 9 points from 11 games, without a single loss, and celebrated his 9th title of the national champion.

The star of the day was Jammu youngster Sumit Grover as he made mockery of the rating difference of 384 points to upstage Bykhovsky, rated 2428. Playing white side of Volga Gambit opening, Grover uprooted the defence of his fancied rival in just 30 moves.

The 4th International Open “Stadium Casablanca” was held from 23rd to 31st December in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. 124 players from 11 countries signed to participate, among them were ten Grandmasters.
