There is often an end-of-term feel at the conclusion of chess tournaments. Players have made friends and agree quick draws. There was no air of this here. Perhaps that is because of the size and depth of the prize list, or perhaps because the organisers work so hard to encourage attractive players to attend the tournament.

There was a wealth of competitive chess for the commentary room to consider: GM Simon Williams had the help there of GM Stuart Conquest, GM Nigel Short, GM Fabiano Caruana, GM Jon Speelman, IM Alex Wohl, IM Jack Rudd and others in the room from time to time.

Gibraltar’s Deputy Chief Minister Joe Holliday paid a visit to the Tradewise Chess Festival 2011 today. In the Alice Suite at the Caleta Hotel, where the main concentration of play in the Gibraltar Masters is taking place every afternoon starting 3pm, the Minister was shown round by festival director Stuart Conquest, and event organiser Brian Callaghan.
