First International Chess Tournament of Forni di Sopra

The Ovens Valley is surrounded by the Alps on the north and on the south by the Carnian of the Dolomites Mountains of Friuli, which last year was declared World Heritage location. Forni di Sopra is also part of Authentic villages: the houses still retain the typical architecture carnica, evoking the atmosphere of a storybook.

1st SP Masters Series in Sao Paulo, Brazil

The 1st stage of the SP Masters Series was played on April 12th, in the “Club Athletico Paulistano”, located in Sao Paulo, the biggest city in Brazil. The tournament had eight players – 6 GMs, 1 IM and 1 FM. The initiative belongs tot he ADX (Association for the Chess Development), and the next tournament will be played on May 10th, at “Club Hebraica”, also in Sao Paulo.

The 1st Chinese Women Chess Masters Tournament was held from 16th April to 26th April 2011 in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. Ten players competed in the round robin tournament. This competition concludes a strenuous row of five events that were played in China within month and a half.

The 38th Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez de La Roda was played from 20th to 24th April in La Roda, Albacete, Spain. 188 players participated in a 9-round Swiss tournament with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment. The organizers have provided a rich prize fund of 10.000 EUR, with 2.000 EUR reserved for the winner.

GM Steingrimsson Captures Icelandic Champion Title

The Icelandic champion title is Steingrimsson’s second. In 1990, he won the title at age of 15 – which is still a record- when the championship was held at Hofn in Hornafjordur, which like Eidar, the current playing venue, is in the eastern part of Iceland. Steingrimsson finished the championship with 7,5 points out of 9.

The A Group is incredibly strong, with dense field and a number of players rated above 2700-elo participating. Already in the second round there were many clashes between Grandmasters. Georgian Merab Gagunashvili held the top-seeded Wang Yue to a draw, while the local hope Nijat Abasov split the point with the experienced Ilia Smirin.

Memorial Branko Vukmanovic was played from 16th to 24th April in Tivat, Montenegro. The 9-round Swiss open had 58 participants and is valid for the Balkan Grand Prix rankings. GM Branko Damljanovic and GM Zvonko Stanojoski shared the first place with 7.0 points each, but Damljanovic took the winner’s trophy on better tie-break score.

The 17th Asian Cities Championship is taking place from 22nd to 28th April in Kartika Chandra, Jakarta, Indonesia. 24 teams from 17 countries compete, top seeded is Shi Jiazhuang from China with average rating of 2583. 18 Grandmasters and many titled players are attending the event.
