The 20th Annual Chicago Open was held on 26-30th May at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel, Wheeling, IL. The tournament was played with six rating groups: Open Section, U2100 Section, U1900 Section, U1700 Section, U1500 Section, U1200 Section.

The 16-years old Marina Brunello had a fantastic tournament and securred IM norm and WGM norm with one round to go. Adolivio Capece informs that two weeks ago Marina received an important Honour directly from Mr Giorgio Napolitano, the President of Italian Republic.

The main Open has 84 players and six Grandmasters in the field. The prize fund is CHF 11.000, with CHF 2.000 reserved for the champion. Senior Open has 44 participants. Top prize in this group is CHF 800.

The other qualifier was to be decided in the tiebreak match after Grandmasters Sandro Mareco and Axel Bachmann shared the second place with 6.5 points each. Mareco was victorious, by 1.5-0.5, and marked a double celebration for Argentina.

The 17-years old Yu Yangyi continued the good run from the Asian Championship and convincingly won the tournament, leaving the opposition as far as point and a half behind. The newly crowned China Champion Ding Liren did not perform well and landed next to last with 3.0 points.

Francisco Vallejo Pons eventually won the tournament, but only after a very curious finish. Heading into the final round, he was half a point ahead of the Ukrainian prodigy Illya Nyzhnyk, but then the experienced Julio Granda Zuniga stunned Paco with black pieces.

The Asian Youth currently held at Subic Bay has just passed the halfway mark of 5 rounds with 4 more rounds to go. India looks to be the dominating force with 17 of their players in top 10 positions in the 6 age group categories. Vietnam and Iran have 9 players in the top 10 and host country Philippines have 7 players in the top 10.

The 3rd International Grandmasters’ Tournament the Lublin Union Memorial is taking place on 15-21st May in Lublin, Poland. Eight Grandmasters play in the round-robin tournament with the average elo of 2680.

2nd SP Masters Series in Sao Paulo

The 2nd blitz tournament in the SP Masters Series was held Tuesday, 10th May, at the Associação Brasileira “A Hebraica” in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Twelve players took part in the event with the time control 3min+2sec. GM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian was the overall winner after defeating GM Gilberto Milos Jr. in the armageddon game in the final match.
