The Russian city of Samara hosted a 9-round Open tournament dedicated to the memory of legendary Grandmaster Lev Polugaevsky. The tournament, which is also a qualifier for the 2011 Russian Cup, took place from 5th to 13th July with 11300 EUR in prizes.

The 13th International Open Torredembarra was held from 2nd to 10th July, 2010, in Torredembarra (Catalonia), Spain. Club d’Escacs Torredembarra managed the 9-round Swiss tournament. 110 players took participation.

The 7th Memorial Chess Tournament “Uroš Dinić” was held on Sunday, 10th July in Paracin, Serbia. 87 players from 13 countries took participation, with 10 Grandmasters, 11 International Masters and 13 FIDE Masters in the field.

The Turkey İş Bank League took place in Konya-Hilton Garden Inn Hotel from June 28th till July 9th, 2011. After 13 rounds and victory in the last match against Turkish Hava Yollari Sport Club 7.5-2.5, Isek Aquamatch Sport Club became a sole winner of the championship.

The 39th edition of the Greek Chess League, organized by the Greek Chess Federation and SA Halkidos “Palamidis O Evoefs”, has finished in Eretria Village Hotel, Eretria. A total of 530 players, of which 99 titled, participated in the Greek Team Chess Championship 2011.

The Turkey İş Bank Chess League 2011 is taking place 27 June – 09 July in the Konya-Hilton Garden Inn Otel. It is one of the top club competitions of Europe, featuring 36 grandmasters and 86 titled players.

The tournament will consist of a Men’s and a Women’s section. The participants of Men’s section are Viswanthan Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian and Vladimir Kramnik and in the Women’s section the players are Koneru Humpy, Tatiana Kosintseva, Viktorija Cmilyte and myself.

The Albena Chess Open with a massive participation of 274 players and generous prize fund of 40000 EUR was held from 25th June to 3rd July in the sea resort Albena in Bulgaria. The first prize in Albena was the impressive 8000 EUR, but what is even better for the chess enthusiasts, there were 30 prizes ranging from 1000 to 100 EUR for amateur chess players, and 16 prizes ranging from 500 to 100 EUR for youngsters.

Commonwealth and South African Open Chess Championships

After the exciting finish two English Grandmasters, Gawain Jones and Nigel Short, shared the first place with 9.5 points each. In the last round they defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta and GM Pablo Lafuente, respectively. Jones was declared champion on better tiebreak.
