The 2010 World Championship match between Anand and Topalov may take place in Baku. This was announced at a press conference during the match Azerbaijan vs The World.

“We have already announced a bidding procedure for Topalov – Anand match,” said Kirsan Ilymzhinov. “The venue will be announced in December and the match will take place in April. Azerbaijan may host the event, and like any other town should prepare the documents for the event.”

The President of Chess Federation of Azerbaijan Elman Rustamov also said that the idea looks quite interesting. “We have to think about this option and if the have a common solution, then necessarily bring an application for a match for the world chess crown. I think that a fight of such a rank only increases the interest in chess in our country and leads to the popularization of this sport in Azerbaijan.”

At the same press conference the FIDE President also announced that Baku is a possible candidate to stage a women Grand Prix and that the final decision will soon be announced. As we know the final stage of the men Grand Prix will take place in Grozny or Oman.
