Arkadij Naiditsch clear first with 7.5 points

The 24th Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Villarrobledo was held on 25-26th July in Villarrobledo, Albacete, Spain. This 9-round rapid tournament traditionally lineups a strong field with many top rated players. Last year winner was Veselin Topalov. The 24th edition gathered 124 participants.

Germany’s best player Arkadij Naiditsch held a clear first place with perfect score after day one. But later, heading to the final round, he was equalised with Ni Hua and Vadim Milov on 6.5 points. Ni and Milov drew their game and Naiditsch beat the 2007 winner Ruslan Ponomariov to claim a clear first place with 7.5 points.

Alexander Grischuk, Alexei Shirov, Alexander Moiseenko and Daniel Fridman scored important last round wins and climbed to the shared second place. GM Aleksa Strikovic also wins to share 8-10th with Etienne Bacrot and Igor Khenkin.

According to the Sah-Mat Lista column, appearance fee for Alexander Grischuk was 5000 Euro, while Ruslan Ponomariov and Alexei Shirov cashed 3500 Euro each. Chinese Ni Hua, rated 2701, received 3000 Euro, which is equal to the official first place prize.
