16th Asian Games – Team Chess Championship

China and India leading in men, Vietnam topping women section after round 3

On the third day of the Team Championship for Men and Women in the 16th Asian Games being held at the Guangzhou Chess Institute, China & India are leading with six match points each after three rounds. Four other teams, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Philippines & Iran are trailing behind with four match points. The top four teams will qualify for the semifinals after seven round Swiss.

In the women section, fancied China were held to a draw by India and thus both the teams dropped one match point. They are on five points each. Vietnam is on six match points and are leading the table after they beat Iran 2.5-1.5 at the end of the third round.

India, thanks to fourth board win by GM G.N.Gopal against GM Vladimirov Yevgeniy, won 2.5-1.5 against Kazakhstan as the other three boards ended in draws. China’s 2.5-1.5 victory was due to Wang Yue & Ni Hua winning their games while Wang Hao drew on the second board. FM Nguyen Duc Hoa pulled one back for Vietnam by beating GM Zhou Jianchao on the third Board.

In the other matches, Uzbekistan beat Qatar 3-1, Philippines beat Bangladesh 3-1, Iran made short work of Yemen 4-0, Kyrgyzstan beat Korea 4-0, Maldives beat Korea 3-1, Mongolia beat Jordan 2.5-1.5.

All the four boards ended in draws between India & China In the women section, the score reading 2-2. Harika, Tania Sachdev, Karvade Eesha & Niosha Mohta drew with Hou Yifan, Ju Wenjun, Zhao Xue & Huang Qian respectively.

In the other matches Vietnam’s Pham Le Thao Nguyen & Nguyen Thi Mai Hung won their games while on the top board WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram lost to WGM Pourkashiyan Atousa. WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An drew with WFM Hejazipour Mitra on the third board. In the other results of the day, Uzbekistan beat Mongolia 3.5-0.5, Turkmenistan beat Bangladesh 2.5-1.5, Syria beat Qatar 4-0 and Korea beat Jordan 2.5-1.5.

As said in our earlier report, the Championship will be held in two phases. Phase one – Preliminaries – will be seven round Swiss to determine the four qualifiers for the semifinals. Each team’s place in order of classification shall be decided by the number of Match points it has scored.

Phase two will be Semifinals. Qualifiers will be paired by their Preliminaries ranking. Match A will be between 1 & 4 and Match B will be between 2 & 3. The two winners shall play the finals on 26th Nov.
