Bansko Open Round Seven

Double round, simul and party on Friday

Lots of action in Bansko this Friday as we had exciting double round in the tournament, a simultaneous exhibition and White Party at the Hotel Premier.

GM Avetik Grigoryan and IM Tamir Nabaty won the morning games, moved into the joint lead and were paired to play one another in the afternoon’s 7th round. Grigoryan achieved a winning position, being an exchange and two pawns up, but then he erred and the Israeli found the way to use his Queen and pair of Bishops to escape with a perpetual check.

We also had a clash of the two top rated players, Ivan Cheparinov and Boris Savchenko. Savchenko admitted that he played bad with white pieces and run into inferior position, but eventually managed to salvage a draw. The poor display on the chess board didn’t prevent him from opening the dance floor at the evening White Party in Hotel Premier. He successfully animated other players and the Greek contingent jumped off their chairs to rock the podium.

IM Miodrag Perunovic gave a simul against eight players as a warm-up for the party (photos bellow).

GM Henrik Danielsen had a tough schedule on Friday. He commented: “So today I played Ivan Cheparinov in round 6 with the Black pieces. Always a difficult task. I decided to play the Chebanenko Slav 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 a6 – a solid choice and well suited for a draw. We played 98 moves before we got this position after Black’s last move 98… Bd1-f3: White Kc5, d6 and a7, Black Kd7 and Bf3. At that point a draw was agreed.

And in the evening I played the solid player Sergey Strelnikov from Ukraine. Two hard games in one day is tough. At one point I felt dizzy during that game. I think I was exhausted by strong concentration so I decided to relax and drink some water. Anyhow the game was also a draw, I didn’t get any advantage with White in the Trompowsky 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5.”

IM Nabaty and GM Grigoryan continue to lead the race with six points each. Five players are close behind trailing by a half of point. Round 8 top pairings are bellow.
