23rd Cannes Chess Festival

Christian Bauer and Hichem Hamdouchi shared first

The 23rd Cannes Chess Festival that was played throughout the week finished today with Grandmasters Christian Bauer and Hichem Hamdouchi sharing the first place with 7.0 points each, though Bauer claimed the trophy on better additional criteria. IM Joseph Sanchez led the race until the very last round when he succumbed to rushing Hamdouchi. Still, Sanchez will be happy with condolence prize – GM norm, the same feat achieved by Italian IM Sabino Brunello.

England’s Gary Quillan, who was terrorizing Grandmasters at the recent Gibraltar Open, beat GM Milan Drasko on the final day to climb to the 3rd place tie. The Festival was once again successfully organized by IM Damir Levacic, member of the ECU board. More information on the Chess and Strategy Blog and official website.
