Donostia Chess Festival – Round Seven

Ruslan Ponomariov wins, gets closer to Hikaru Nakamura

Ruslan Ponomariov beat the surging Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the 7th round of the main tournament at Donostia Chess Festival to reduce the gap behind the leading Hikaru Nakamura to only half a point. Peter Svidler is third with 4.5 points. Once the youngsters realised how shaky the former world champion Anatoly Karpov is, they started charging like hungry sharks. Karpov even switched from Petroff defence to Caro-Kann, but that didn’t save him against Francisco Vallejo Pons’ sharp advanced system.

The top seeded players in the KUTXA Tournament, Loek Van Wely and Christian Bauer, were defeated by fellow Grandmasters Hicham Hamdouchi and Jordi Magem Badals respectively. Magem Badals is now first with 5.5 points, half a step ahead of Van Wely, while Bauer slipped down to 4th place. Local hero Jose Luis Fernandez Garcia achieved a winning position against Elizbar Ubilava, but then committed a terrible blunder by grabbing an irrelevant Bishop and running into two-move checkmate combination.

Donostia Nakamura

Hikaru Nakamura – San Sebastian seems a tournament fated to be won by a young player from the other side of the Atlantic, as it happened in 1911 with Capablanca. And, in both occasions, the last player to be included into the field! But apparently there is no Rubinstein this time to make things harder for him. So many causalities that we have christened him “Capamura” (or “Nakablanca”, as you prefer).

Donostia Karpov

Anatoly Karpov – The only player the people still recognize when you take him out to a restaurant. Being a living legend, Karpov is having a disastrous tournament, but it seems that he still loves playing chess from time to time. With no doubt, before his recently announced rematch with Kasparov, he will have to do some serious preparation is he doesn’t want to be annihilated.

GM Eric Prie is ruthless with his favourite London system, having scored another win with white pieces to join GM Glenn Flear on shared first place in the Euskal Xake Eskola Tournament. The women’s tournament, Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa Tournament, is turning into a wild race between IM Sophie Milliet of France and WGM Yana Melnikova of Russia, who are sharing the lead with 5.5 points, full point and a half ahead of rest of the field.

Donostia Vallejo

Francisco Vallejo Pons – The Spaniard is not getting too many chances to play in round-robin tournaments – specially in his own country, where he is not getting invites to Linares anymore for reasons hard to understand – and even harder to explain. In San Sebastian he has already showed us his creative style of play, with a novelty in the third move (3.g4!?) against Vachier-Lagrave.

Donostia San Segundo

Pablo San Segundo – (in the picture, he appears on the right, along with Mr Felix Izeta, the retired GM from the Basque Country who is also the main promoter of this event). Probably, San Sebastian ’09 is the tournament of his life for Pablo San Segundo – or at least, the strongest one he has ever played. Not being a chess professional anymore -he has a successful career apart from chess-, Pablo has prepared thoroughly and, despite being the lowest rated player, he is a tough one. His only experience at this level was the Ciudad de Madrid tournaments along the nineties, where he already proved what he is capable, being forth in 1994 and 1998, despite facing the likes of Judit Polgar, Viktor Korchnoi or Vishy Anand.
