Donostia Chess Festival – Round Eight

Hikaru Nakamura maintains half a point advantage before the last round of the main tournament

Francisco Vallejo Pons pulled a second consecutive win in the main tournament at Donostia Chess Festival and is already sharing the third place with top-seeded Peter Svidler. Nothing else changed on the top, Hikaru Nakamura is still leading with 6,0 points after 8 rounds, while Ruslan Ponomariov is second with 5,5. Anatoly Karpov lost again, this time to another former world champion, Rustam Kasimdzhanov.

KUTXA Tournament and Euskal Xake Eskola Tournament were relatively peaceful and nothing has dramatically changed after the penultimate round. Jordi Magem Badals, Eric Prie and Glenn Flear are in best position to claim the respective events.

Donostia Ponomariov

Ruslan Ponomariov – almost considered a “local” player. Being his “other half” a basque girl, he is very fond on the Basque culture himself.

Donostia Vachier-Lagrave

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the young talent from France, has crossed the 2700 barrier without making too much noise – but at high speed. Now, being only 19 years old, he is already the second player in France… soon to be the best one? He achieved an impressive win against Karpov in round three, and Tolia praised the quality of his game: “I knew he was a very good tactician, but he also made 2 or 3 moves in our game that really impressed me!”

But in the women’s tournament, Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa Tournament, IM Sophie Milliet made an important leap forward as she beat the main competitor WGM Yana Melnikova and is now leading alone with a full point advantage. A draw in the last round will be sufficient to win the top prize.

Donostia Granda

Julio Granda Zuniga – The Peruvian Grandmaster is a face that lately you don’t get to see very often in top events. Being considered one of the greatest natural talents of the game, his real potential is a mistery. Specially when he is motivated, as it happens to be the case in San Sebastian, where he has the chance to show his real might.
