Mamedyarov – Van Wely live!

live commentary of Essent 2007

Hello and welcome to the live commentary of the first round of the Essent Crown Group. Today we will follow in details the battle between the local hero GM Loek Van Wely and the top seeded GM Mamedyarov. They have only several games with each other – a draw at Corus 2006, draw at the 3rd Aeroflot Festival, and one win with black each at the Spanish club championship.

Knowing both players, today we will not see a fast draw. Loek Van Wely likes to play Slav Defence, meran variation, with black, at which Mamedyarov will for sure pick some exotic, rarely played line. King Indian and Grunfeld are other two possibilities, as they have been played in their previous games.

Mamedyarov and Van Wely participated at the ECC. Mamedyarov won against Gata Kamsky and finished with 3 wins and 3 draws on first board. Van Wely lost from Svidler, but drew Morozevich and Kamsky for a total of +1 =3 -1.

Both players will for sure strive for victory as they have good memories from tournaments here. Loek Van Wely is six times Dutch champion, while Mamedyarov won last year’s Essent.
