FIDE Women Grand Prix in Nalchik

WIM Juldiz Betul Cemre stuns GM Zhao Xue in the first round

In Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, the 1st round of the third stage of the FIDE Grand Prix series among women had started on Monday. In the fighting first round, four games finished with decisive result, and in all of them players with white pieces gained victories.

The main surprise of the first round came from the young Turkish WIM Juldiz Betul Cemre who beat the leader of the Grand Prix Series GM Zhao Xue. In this game the Chinese player chose the Alekhine defense and easily equalized the game. But later Zhao made a blunder in the endgame and allowed her opponent to promote the pawn into new queen.

Russian Tatiana Kosintseva was victorious against the Women World Championship finalist Yifan Hou from China, while Humpy Koneru convincingly outplayed Elina Danielan in the Grunfeld indian defense.

Opening ceremony

The solemn opening of the Women FIDE Grand Prix chess tournament was held in the Spa-hotel Sindika In Nalchik, on April, 25th, 2010.

The President of the International Chess Federation Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has warmly thanked the administration of Kabardino-Balkarian Republic and personally the President Arsen Kanokov for a great contribution to development of chess as in the Republic itself, so all over the world.

He wished the Republic wins not only in wrestling and football (Spartak Nalchik currently leading in the Russian Premier League, ed.note) but also in chess. Ilumzhinov noticed that there will be a serious competition and millions of the chess fans who will follow the game on the Internet and will get great pleasure. The First Deputy of the Prime Minister Murat Thazaplizhev wished all the participants luck, and said “let the strongest win”.

Then the drawing of lots, under supervision of Sava Stoisavljevic, the international arbiter from Serbia, took place.
