Gausdal and Sigeman in progress

Irina is crushing the competition

Carlsen thinking 1

Magnus Carlsen

The highlight of the week is the fantastic start of US top female player IM Irina Krush at the Gausdal Classics, where she is seeking for her 2nd GM norm. Irina first beat English IM Gawain Jones, who is also playing for the norm, and in next round she knocked the famous Russian GM Alexei Dreev. Draws against GM Rozentalis and legendary GM Portisch bring her points to 3.0 and she is 2nd place behind Magnus Carlsen. Irina has to face top rated Carlsen and Krasenkov, but we are positive that she will score at least the necessary 5.5 points.

Gausdal round 4 standings:

1. GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR 2693) 3.5; 2-3. IM Irina Krush (USA 2478) and GM Michal Krasenkov (POL 2661) 3.0; 4-5. GM Lajos Portisch (HUN 2512) and GM Eduardas Rozentalis (LIT 2578) 2.5; 6-7. Cheparinov thinking

Ivan Cheparinov

Two Swedish players, along with the Bulgarian Ivan Cheparinov, are leading at the Sigeman tournament with 3 points out of 4 games. After the shaky start, when Cheparinov beat him in nice game, Emanuel Berg won three consecutive games to catch up on the top. Ivan Cheparinov had problems against Pontus Carlsson in the third round, but managed to secure a draw, and today he won against Emil Hermansson. Tiger Hillarp-Persson is having safe ride so far. In the 4th round he won against the always dangerous Jonny Hector.

Sigeman round 4 standings:

1-3. GM Tiger Hillarp-Persson (SWE 2552), GM Ivan Cheparinov (BUL 2646) and GM Emanuel Berg (SWE 2574) 3.0; 4-7. GM Vassilios Kotronias (GRE 2570), GM Erwin l’Ami (NED 2617), GM Jan Timman (NED 2545) and IM Pontus Carlsson (SWE 2506) 2.0; 8. GM Parimarjan Negi (IND 2515) 1.5; 9. GM Jonny Hector (SWE 2537) 1.0; 10. IM Emil Hermansson (SWE 2475) 0.5
