The 32nd Ikaros Chess Festival was officially opened on Saturday, 11th July, in Agios Kirykos! With 172 players from 23 federations, and among them 8 GMs, 11 IMs, 5 WGMs, for a total of 37 titled players, this year’s event is definitely the strongest in the long history of the Festival. Taking into account that exactly in the same time frame another two international tournaments take place in Greece, in Rethymno and Leros, gathering around 250 people (including accompanying persons, parents, friends, arbiters and coaches) at Ikaria for a chess tournament is a considerable achievement.

The first round that was played yesterday at the beautiful Sports Center of Aghios Kirykos did not include any major upsets apart from the draw of Anastasios Papahristoudis (seeded 56th) against the Polish GM Piotr Bobras (seeded 4th). The tournament continues today with the 2nd round when, due to the accelerated Swiss system, we already have some interesting fights. The results and pairings together with the statistics of the tournament can be found on the tournament website. Daily reports will be posted here on Chessdom.com, the Official Media Partner of Ikaros Chess Festival.

The initial impressions of all participants are so far positive, something very encouraging for the organizing committee of the festival whose main objective is to offer a pleasant combination of chess and vacations at reasonable prices in a relaxing atmosphere on a picturesque Aegean island like Ikaria. From the point of view of the local residents, Ikaros Chess Festival is an important event not only culturally and athletically but also financially. That is the reason why the municipality of Aghios Kirykos has embraced the tournament all these years and supports in permanently.

It should be also mentioned that Ikaria is declared to be one of the Blue Zones, i.e. places on earth where people have the highest life expectancy!
