GM Robert Kempinski with perfect score at Ikaros Chess Festival 2009

GMs Robert Markus, Sergey Zagrebelny, Aleksander Mista and IM Harald Groetz sharing second place

The Polish GM Robert Kempinski is the only player with perfect score after the 5th round of Ikaros Chess Festival 2009 that takes place at Aghios Kirykos, Ikaria Island in Greece. Kempinski managed to successfully overcome the obstacle of Vladimir Tukmakov in an interesting game in which the veteran Ukrainian grandmaster seemed to be in command but eventually had to resign after 37 moves. Despite this defeat, however, Vladimir Tukmakov seems to be in a good mood and full of energy, forming an example for all younger players. Without doubt his presence at Ikaria this summer is a definite plus for the tournament.

On the second board the game between Evgeny Vorobiov (2nd seed) and Robert Markus (3rd seed) ended in a draw, but not without a fight, while on the next boards GM Alexanter Mista beat Indian IM Atanu Lahiri, IM Harald Groetz emerged victorious from his game against GM Andrey Rychagov who seems to be out of form, and “the silent” GM Sergey Zagrebelny beat the Armenian WGM Nelly Aginian.

The playing hall

In the 6th round the most important games are: Kempinski – Zagrebelny, Markus – Groetz, Mista – Bobras (the two Polish GMs are good friends, it remains to see whether they will play for a win or settle for a friendly draw), De Haan – Vorobiov, Manakova – Tukmakov, Spirin – Nikolaou, Ris – Gazis. It’s worth to note the very good results of the Greek players Giorgos Nikolaou, Stathis Gazis and Panagiotis Spirou who with 4/5 are close to the top.

Despite the fact that in exactly the same time frame another two strong international tournaments are held in Greece, at Rethymno and Leros, this year’s Ikaros Chess Festival managed to attract a large number of Greek and foreign participants who wish to combine a good tournament with relaxing vacations on a picturesque and quiet island like Ikaria. Some statistical facts about this year’s tournament:
