Ikaros Chess Festival – Kempinski Wins Again!

GM Robert Kempinski from Poland with perfect score after six rounds

Robert Kempinski is dictating events in the Ikaros Chess Festival 2009 since after the 6th round he is the only player with a perfect score (6/6!) and keeps his lead. The Grandmaster from Poland beat the Uzbek Grandmaster Sergey Zagrebelny in 34 moves in a game that started as an English Opening only to turn into a reversed Sicilian!

In the other top games, Serbian Robert Markus beat the Austrian Harald Groetz, two Polish grandmasters Mista and Bobras made a quick friendly draw, the Russian Evgeny Vorobiov won against Eric de Haan from Holland while Vladimir Tukmakov beat Maria Manakova who, despite this loss, has a good tournament so far.

Among the other female players, Georgian WIM Inga Khurtsilava has performed well up to now and is currently the leading woman, while among the greek players Giorgos Nikolaou, after achieving a hard fought draw against Russian IM Oleg Spirin, remained near the top. Same goes for Frangiskos Sigalas, Nikos Aggelis and Marios Tassopoulos (all with 4.5/6) who won their games.

Currently Robert Kempinski is in the lead with 6/6 followed by Robert Markus (5.5 points) and Vorobiov, Tukmakov, Mista, Khurtsilava, Ris and Klip (all with 5.0 points).

In the 7th round the game between the two leaders Markus-Kempinski is of great importance for both players. The other top games are Vorobiov – Ris, Klip – Mista and Tukmakov – Khurtsilava.

This year Ikaros Chess Festival takes place at the Sports Center of Aghios Kirykos. After a period when the tournament had to change location every year, from the old town hall to the high school and back to town hall, now it seems that the new venue well fits the needs of the festival. Spatial and located on the hill of Xerokampos above Aghios Kirykos, the venue combines good playing conditions, as the ever blowing wind of Ikaria keeps the temperature at very reasonable levels, with an excellent view to the Aegean Sea. When the sky is clear one can see the Monastery of Apocalypses in the island of Patmos or even the shores of Asia Minor!

The results and pairings together with the statistics of the tournament can be found on the tournament website. The reports will also be posted here on, the Official Media Partner of Ikaros Chess Festival.
