Leko and Cheparinov win in Jermuk Grand Prix opening round

5th FIDE Grand Prix, 9-24th August, Jermuk, Armenia

The fifth FIDE Grand Prix tournament got under way this Sunday in Jermuk, Armenia. Local hero Levon Aronian, who arrived as freshly crowned Mainz Chess Classic champion, is top-seeded player in the field of 14. Previously, Aronian had won both Grand Prix tournaments that he participated in (Sochi and Nalchik).

The tournament is hosted by the Armenian Chess Federation and dedicated to the memory of the 9th World Chess Champion Tigran Petrosian, who was born 80 years ago. One of Petrosian’s great rivals, Serbian Grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric, was seen chatting with Peter Leko, also born in Serbia, during the opening ceremony. Exactly Peter Leko was one of the winners in the first round, together with Ivan Cheparinov of Bulgaria.

The competition concludes on 24th August.
