Étienne Bacrot taking helm at Montreal International

Anton Kovalyov and Arkadij Naiditsch sharing second

The 10th Montreal International Chess Tournament under sponsorship of Empresa Group is taking place from 27th August until 7th September in Montréal, Canada. Étienne Bacrot is enjoying a firm lead with 4.5 points after six rounds. He won a nice game versus Yuri Shulman in a highly topical variation of the Queen’s Indian defence, but then in the sixth round he was forced to seek a draw after complications against the Canadian Grandmaster Mark Bluvshtein.

Arkadij Naiditsch was Bacrot’s companion on the top until the unpleasant game in round six, when Varuzhan Akobian defeated him after only 16 moves. Quebec Champion Anton Kovalyov is still holding high on the shared second place. GM Vinay Bhat from USA wins two straight games to reach a credible 50% score.
