Paleohora International Open Chess Tournament

Evgeniy Najer and Robert Fontaine shared first place

The 2nd Paleohora International Open Chess Tournament, organized by Municipality of Pelekanos, Chania Chess Academy, Prefecture of Chania and Union of Cretan Chess Clubs, was held on 21-28th July 2009, in Paleohora, Greece. The 9-round tournament with 8.500 Eur prize fund has attracted massive participation, with 230 players gathered at the playing venue in Municipality of Pelekanos Community Centre.

GM Evgeniy Najer and GM Robert Fontaine won the crucial last round games to leap forward and share the first place with 7.5 points each. Najer continues his brilliant run after winning the 2009 World Open and Richard Riordan Chess Festival, all on this same month. Najer was member of Gata Kamsky’s team during the Challenger match in Sofia earlier this year, and he obviously benefited from this project. Something similar is happening to GM Radosław Wojtaszek, one of Vishwanathan Anand’s seconds during the World Championship match, who won a series of tournaments in the recent months.

Paleohora 09 Najer

GM Evgeniy Najer

Robert Fontaine made a fantastic comeback to win game after game, following the surprising defeat against FM Ioannis Maris (rated 2152) in round two. This hurt his tiebreak score, allowing Najer to claim the trophy, but still an excellent achievement by the famous Grandmaster and journalist.
