6th Prospero A. Pichay Jr. Cup

21st to 26th August at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Manila

The 6th Prospero A. Pichay Jr. Cup has started in Manila, Philippines, a precursor to the Florencio Campomanes Memorial later this weekend. GM Murtas Kazghaleyev of Kazakhstan leads the field of 47 players, among which are 9 Grandmasters and 11 International Masters. The separate “Challenge” Group has additional 75 players rated under 2200 FIDE.

GM Anton Filippov from Uzbekistan is leading the race with perfect three points from that many games. But some of his colleagues are experiencing a bumpy drive. GM Darwin Laylo started off with two draws against lower rated compatriots, while Turkish GM Kivanc Haznedaroglu suffered a surprising defeat in the first round and couldn’t win a game since.

The tournament of $30,000 prize fund is taking place from 21st to 26th August at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Manila.
