Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez 2010 Concluded

Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez 2010 was held on 18th-23rd of August in the ancient city of Cusco, Peru.

This event brought together about 400 people from 10 countries, to participate in three groups for players with different ratings. The tournament was a Swiss event of 9 rounds with 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per player. The prize fund is $40,000 as the first place in the A tournament brings $10,000. The games were being played in Centro de Convenciones de la Municipalidad Provincial del Cusco.

GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez of Colombia and local favourite GM Julio Granda Zuniga, who were in lead throughout most of the tournament, shared the first place with 7.0 points each. Neuris Delgado was declared winner on better additional criteria. It is the second title he earned this summer, having previously won the Magistral Bicentenario Independencia de Colombia.

The tournament had the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as head of the Honorary Committee, which is completed by Jorge Vega, Milton Iturry Quiñonez, and Luis Flores García (Mayor of Cusco).

Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez 2010 was dedicated to the memory of the first American chess player – Inca Atahualpa.
