Thej Kumar and Navin Kanna join leaders after round 12

Second seed Thej Kumar of Railways and Navin Kanna of Tamilnadu produced decisive results in their favour in the penultimate round to join with the overnight leaders with nine points in the ongoing 48th National Challengers Chess Championship here at Preksha Vihar on Saturday.

As expected, most of the top boards ended without decisive results in twelfth round encounters as the players played it safe to get into the qualification bracket of top 30 for the forthcoming National Premier Championship scheduled to be held at Delhi in the month of December. Out of top twelve boards, only Thej Kumar and Navin Kanna managed to get full points while all other boards ended without decisive results.

On top table overnight leaders M R Venkatesh settled for half points against International Master Shyam Sundar in 22 moves by repetition of moves while Railway team mates Suvrajit Saha and Vikramaditya Kamble signed the peace treaty after 41 moves.

Playing with black pieces in Caro-Kann defence, Thej Kumar defeated former champion International Master P Konguvel of PSPB in 41 moves while Navin Kanna beat team mate Vishnu Prasanna in just 30 moves in Reti opening to be among the leaders pack. These results made the championship wide open with six players at the pole position of the point table after penultimate round. The final round match will be played on Sunday.
