Parimarjan Negi moving into sole lead after round seven

New Delhi (15 Dec 2010): Second seed Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi of PSPB has taken a sole lead with five and half points after beating overnight joint leader GM-elect S P Sethurman of Tamilnadu in the crucial seventh round match of the ongoing REC National Premier Chess Championship here at K R Mangalam World School, GK-II on Wednesday.

Playing black side of Queen’s Gambit Accepted game, Negi had shown great end game skills as he sacrificed his bishop for two pawns in the fifty first move and garnered full point after seven more moves. Meanwhile top seed G N Gopal registered his third win after a series of four draws in the event as he beat International Master M R Lalith Babu in a long fought battle in Classical Caro-Kann game that lasted 78 moves. Young Maharashtra International Master Vidit Santosh Gujarathi defeated National Challenger Champion M R Venkatesh and now trails behind the leader along with Gopal with a drift of half point.

In other important seventh round encounters, Veteran Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay and Grandmaster B Adhiban agreed to split the points after a marathon match that lasted five hours and twenty minutes while fifth seed Tejas Bakre of Air India defeated Orissa International Master Debashis Das. R R Laxman settled for half point against his team mate M S Thejkumar and International Master Sudhakar Babu celebrated his birthday in style by cutting the cake before the round and made it sweeter by defeating Akash Thakur of Railways in the seventh round match.

After a rest day tomorrow, in the eighth round Negi will paired against Vidit with white pieces and Gopal takes on Bakre with dark colour.
