Singapore International Chess Festival 2010

GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili and WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An are Asean Champions

The 7th Singapore International Chess Festival 2010, featuring six events of regional and world level, was held from 26th to 30th December. The highlight of this year’s festival were the inaugural Asean Championships for Men and Women.

Grandmaster Zurab Azmaiparashvili from Georgia, qualifying for the Asean as Singapore Permanent Resident, and Philippines’ IM Oliver Barbosa shard the first place in the Asean Championship for Men. Both players gathered 6.5 points from nine games, but Azmaiparashvili was declared champion on better additional criteria. 32 players, of which 25 titled, competed in this very strong event.

Vietnam ladies completely dominated the Asean Championship for Women. WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An finished clear first with 7.5 points while her compatriot WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram remained half a point behind. WGM Le Thanh Tu, also from Vietnam, takes bronze, while the top-seeded WGM Sukandar Irine Kharisma from Indonesia remained fourth. Full crosstables are bellow.

China’s GM Wen Yang stormed through the Singapore Open Tournament and conceded the only draw in the last round against the fellow GM R R Laxman from India. Yang is first with the fantastic 8.5 points, while GM Villamayor Buenaventura from Philippines took the second place after a final victory with black pieces.

Wrapping up a very hectic 2010 chess calendar shall be the 21st annual Singapore – Malaysia Chess Challenge 2011 to be held on 31 December 2010 – 1 January 2011 at the Stansfield Residence 1.
