GM Aleksej Aleksandrov victorious in Orissa

3rd Orissa International GM Open Chess Tournament – KiiT CUP 2011

The 3rd Orissa International GM Open Chess Tournament – KiiT CUP 2011 took place from 27th May to 6th June, at the Banquet Hall, KiiT University Campus, Bhubaneswar – 24, Orissa, India.

The tournament was organised by the All Orissa Chess Association and KiiT University, Bhubaneswar, under the guidance of All India Chess Federation. The total prize fund was $31,000 approx.

220 players participated in the 11-round Swiss event. GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus scored a crucial last round victory against the local GM Panchanathan Magesh, who held the lead throughout the tournament, to grab the winner’s trophy with 9.0 points.

Panchanathan Magesh had to console himself with a shared second place, where he landed together with GM Tigran Petrosian and GM Gupta Abhijeet. IM Grover Sahaj is leading the group of players on the shared 5th place.
