1st HDBank Cup Open 2011

Grandmasters Yu Yangyi and Wen Yang share the first place

The Vietnam Chess Federation organized the 1st HDBank Cup Open 2011 from 4th to 9th January 2011 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Top local players, Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Cao Sang took participation, in addition to the strong rosters from China and Philippines. The prize fund was US$25,000 worth with $6,000 dedicated to the winner.

China celebrates double victory as their Grandmasters Yu Yangyi and Wen Yang are sharing the first place with 7 points each. Yangyi takes the trophy thanks to the slightly better tiebreak sum. Philippines’ GM John Paul Gomez had a flying start with five consecutive victories, including that one against the top seed Le Quang Liem, but then he slowed down, signing three draws, and finally lost the crucial last round game against Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. Gomez, Nguyen, Quang Liem, GM Zhou Weiqi and Xiu Deshun are sharing the third place with 6.5 each.
