Sasa Jevtic taking a sole lead in Paracin

Four players in position to fight for the IM norm

Untitled local player Sasa Jevtic is surprisingly leading after seven rounds of the International Chess Tournament “Sport Summer 2008″, which is currently ongoing in Paracin, Serbia. He had a slow start, innocently drawing a couple of games, but when suddenly an opportunity presented itself, Sasa firmly seized it. The then-leading FM Boroljub Zlatanovic should be praised for a Tal-like Rook sacrifice against Jevtic’s Caro-Kann in the 6th round, but Black defended coolly to grab a full point and force Zlatanovic to fight hard for the IM norm in the last two rounds.

In round seven Jevtic was White against uncompromising fighter FM Dejan Brankovic, who had just lost previous round earlier that day. Black sacrificed a b-pawn like in Volga Gambit, but once breaking the central pawn chain, White Queen laid waste in enemy camp. Talented junior from FYROM, Filip Pancevski, is on the 2nd place after two wins with Black pieces in rounds 5 and 6. Still, in 7th round the last-placed FM Mihailo Vujic held him to a draw.

Thanks to the significant rating difference, Jevtic needs only a draw in the remaining two rounds in order to fulfill his first IM norm (5.5 points). For everyone else IM norm is at 6.0 points, therefore Pancevski has to earn 1.5 points, while Zlatanovic and Milenkovic (who will meet eachother in the last round) have to win both of their remaining games.

Round 8 is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 CET, games can be watched live on the tournament page hosted by Serbian Chess Federation.
