Parimarjan Negi beats Sriram Jha, takes sole lead

New Delhi (14 May 2010): Second seed Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi took sole lead with six and half points after beating Grandmaster Sriram Jha in the seventh round of the ongoing Parsvnath Commonwealth Chess Championship here at Clarks Inn, Pacific Mall on Friday.

Playing with black pieces in English Opening, Negi outwitted his city mate in 44 moves. After an unexpected first round draw versus 1964-rated player, Negi added speed and scored six straight wins. Meanwhile overnight joint leader Russian Grandmaster Maletin Pavel signed the peace treaty in 31 moves with top seed and fellow Russian Grandmaster Alexey Dreev.

A pack of five players including former world junior champion Grandmaster Abhijit Gupta and Grandmaster RR Laxman are now trailing behind the leader with a drift of half point in this 8 lakh prize money championship.

Abhijeet got better off International Master Paciencia Enrique of Singapore while Laxman overcame Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Kokarev in the seventh round encounter. Grandmaster Eltaj Safarli of Azerbaijan, who beat International Master MR Lalith Babu in the seventh round, is giving company to Abhijeet and Laxman along with Grandmasters Kravtsiv Martyn of Ukraine and Maletin Pavel.

In other seventh round matches, Jharkhand youngster Abhishek Das overcame Grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev while K Priyadharshan suffered his first defeat in the championship from the hands of Uzbek Grandmaster Saidali Iuldachev. International Master K Rathnakaran beat National champion International Master B Adhiban while Grandmasters Abhijit Kunte and Tejas Bakre settled for half points against International Master Shyam Sundar and Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Bochorov respectively.
