Round Four – Eight share lead, upsets continue

New Delhi (13 Jan 09): The 7th edition of Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament became Waterloo for Grandmasters as three more joined the list of causalities after fourth round here at Modern School today. Former National Champion and Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte suffered a shock defeat from the hands of Kazakh International Master Boris Katalymov, while Chennai based C Praveen Kumar got better off 2004 champion Grandmaster Saidali Iuldachev of Uzbekistan. Grandmaster Anuar Ismagambetov of Kasakhstan also tasted the defeat in the fourth round as he went down against International Master Prathmesh Mokal.

As many as eight players including local favourite Parimarjan Negi leading the table with perfect score after four rounds. In the top table Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine signed peace treaty against International Master SP Sethuraman in just 15 moves while Arghyadip Das held national champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly for a creditable draw in marathon match that lasted 88 moves. Playing with black pieces Wizkid Parimarjan overcame Olzhas Khamzin of Kazakhstan in just 30 moves without much struggle.
