GM Alexander Motylev

The 10th International Poikovsky chess tournament, organized in honor of former world champion Anatoly Karpov, has started today. The players have presented us with a thrilling first round, where four games finished with decisive result and only one ended in a draw.

Mtel Masters 2009 winner and top-seed at Poikovsky, Alexei Shirov of Spain, lost with his favourite Archangelsk defence against Russian gladiator Ernesto Inarkiev. Another beautiful game was Naiditsch-Onischuk, where German Grandmaster swiftly punished Black’s relaxed chase after an exchange. Alexander Motylev and Vugar Gashimov also win to round up an exceptionally successful day for white pieces’ holders.

GM Vugar Gashimov (AZE 2730) – GM Viktor Bologan (MDA 2690) 1-0

GM Ernesto Inarkiev (RUS 2676) – GM Alexei Shirov (ESP 2745) 1-0

GM Alexander Motylev (RUS 2677) – GM Sergei Rublevsky (RUS 2702) 1-0
