Kirsan Ilymzhinov closes the match

“Azerbaijan was too hospitable, while The World too bloodthirsty,” said the President of FIDE Kirsan Ilymzhinov at the closing ceremony of the tournament. However, he underlined that the importance of this event is the promotional value it has. Many people followed the games in the playing hall, among which a good amount of young children, while Azeri media had the match as central event on their pages. “This suggests that interest in chess in Azerbaijan is high and the country will create in the future world champions,” concluded Ilymzhinov.

Both Anand and Kramnik shared their satisfaction with the visit in Azerbaijan and expressed the desire to come back soon. Their trip, however, is not over, as tomorrow they will play a simul in the National Park. They will be joined by the team of Azerbaijan to take on 86 boards in memory of the 86th birthday of Heydar Aliyev.
