XXIII Reykjavik Open 2008

3-12 March in Reykjavik, Iceland

The 23rd Reykjavik Open, organized by Bjorn Thorfinnsson and with sponsorship from Glitnir, has started yesterday in Reykjavik Chess Center, Faxafen 12. The tournament is open for foreign players above 2200 FIDE and Icelandic players above 2000 FIDE, rate of play is 90 min/40 moves + 15 minutes + 30 sec. increment for every move.

Prizes: 1st USD 8.000, 2nd USD 5.000, 3rd USD 3.000, 4th USD 1.500, 5th-8th USD 1.000, 9-10th USD 750, the best female player, best player under 2400 and 2200 will receive USD 750.

It started of with a couple of shocking results in the first round, most notably Iceland’s FM Bjorn Thorfinnsson beating highest rated in the event and FIDE Grand Prix participant Wang Yue of China. More local players performed in high class to earn draws against Grandmasters:
