The fourth edition of the Ruy Lopez International Festival is taking place on 11-19th June in Villafranca de los Barros, Extremadura, Spain. Numerous events are planned, some of them being youth and amateur tournaments, lectures, master tournament, meetings, rapid open…

The main event of the Festival is the round robin Master Tournament with 8 players. First round was played on Saturday and all four games finished with decisive results. Ivan Cheparinov won a pawn of Vladimir Malakhov and after the exchange of all heavy pieces, routinely converted the advantage into full point. WGM Deisy Cori was spending lots of time trying to complicate matters against Italy’s top player Fabiano Caruana, who calmly collected offered material and scored a victory.

European Women’s Chess Champion Pia Cramling appears to be in poor shape ever since Sigeman Tournament. Here she got a solid position after the opening but then simply allowed to be overrun by Sargissian’s advancing pawns. Spanish derby between GM Ivan Salgado and IM Manuel Pérez Candelario was an exciting game where Black held level until the time trouble, but then his position quickly collapsed as he couldn’t find the best moves with seconds on the clock.
