Scottish Chess Championship 2009 – Round 7 update

GM S. Arun Prasad and GM Mark Hebden in joint lead

Round seven of the Scottish Chess Championship was played on Friday. Indian Grandmaster S.Arun Prasad managed to overcome local player GM K. Arakhamia-Grant in a wild sacrificial game. For a while it seemed the players were in a contest to see who could sacrifice the most pieces. GM Prasad managed to sacrifice an extra knight… and this led to his victory.

With overnight leader, English GM Mark Hebden, playing a solid draw on board one this means he now shares the lead with Prasad. Half a point behind are Indian GM Panchanathan and English IM Greet. A further half point back are the chasing pack that includes home favourites GM Motwani, GM McNab, FM Gourlay and GM Shaw. With only two rounds to go, who can break from the pack to become champion?

The Open Championship is playing from 2pm-8pm every day from Saturday July 11th – Sunday July 19th inclusive. For more information, live games, photos, and round by round reports please visit the Championship website
