Campeonato de España Individual Absoluto

27th September – 4th October in Ceuta

Spanish Absolute Individual Championship is taking place on 27th September – 4th October in Ceuta, an autonomous city of Spain located on the North African side of the Strait of Gibraltar. The knockout system is employed once again, with 16 players at the start of the championship. There were many surprises as the competition progressed, resulting in Julen Arizmendi remaining the only Grandmaster in the Semifinal.

GM José M. López was eliminated in the first round, but the quarterfinal was real massacre when all elo-favored Grandmasters – Illeskas, Khamrakulov, Narciso Dublan and San Segundo – were sent home after tiebreaks. Sah-Mat Lista reports that GM Manuel Rivas was forfeited already after the first game because he refused to subject to anti-doping test.
