2008 SPICE Cup – Round Eight

Kritz and Akobian still leading

Iceland champion Hannes Stefansson finally scored first victory in the 8th round of the 2008 SPICE Cup, his victim being Polish GM Kamil Miton. White enjoyed small advantage until Miton erred with 29…g6, most likely missing the point 33. Qc4! after which Black position collapses.

Mikhalevski – Akobian featured wild and slightly forgotten Botvinnik Semi-Slav, which was put aside by “safer” Moscow variation. Mikhalevski took a draw by perpetual check in the position which he played on in an earlier encounter against 2347-rated I.Karim in this-year’s Gibtelecom Masters. That game, nevertheless, also finished in a draw, but only after White saved himself in weaker ending.

The leaders Leonid Kritz and Varuzhan Akobian will meet eachother in the last round to hopefully decide the tournament winner in a direct duel.
