The 2nd Subic International Open is taking place on 25-31st May at Subic, Philippines. It is a 9-round Swiss tournament with 74 participants, including 17 GM's and 14 IM's, and a total prize fund of $30.000 USD.
With two rounds remaining to be played, Iranian top player, GM Ghaem Maghami Ehsan, is in best position to claim the tournament as he is holding a half point lead ahead of GM Sandipan Chanda of India and GM Rahman Ziaur of Bangladesh. Ghaem Maghami played a brilliant endgame to beat GM Dao Thien Hai in Friday's round 7, while Rahman helped him by dispatching the young Chinese Xiu Deshun.
3rd-seeded Parimarjan Negi won with white pieces and climbed up to joint 4th place. Best placed Filipino players are IM Richard Bitoon, GM Darwin Laylo and GM Mark Paragua, each with 4.5 points.
