U.S. Chess Championship – Round One

Tyler Hughes stunned GM Boris Gulko. Replayable games added.

The 2009 U.S. Chess Championship that made a beginning on Friday at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis left chess aficionados in dark after the official website canceled live games broadcast. The results and round two pairings finally appeared in the late evening, but the pgn files are still not available. No updates on Chess Life Online or ICC, Susan Polgar has photos on her blog.

Many tournaments encounter problems at the start, hopefully everything will be resolved for round two.

Update: Jennifer Shahade has a report on the USCF website. Pgn file posted for download (still with some errors, for example 25. Bb4 in Ibragimov-Kamsky while the USCF website shows more logical 25. Bb1…).

The reigning champion Yuri Shulman, top seed Gata Kamsky and superstar Hikaru Nakamura have all scored wins. GM-elect Robert Hess beat GM Larry Christiansen, while US Junior Champion Tyler Hughes stunned GM Boris Gulko.

The Championship will be played until the 17th May. 24 qualified players (list and criteria here) will compete throughout 9-rounds swiss tournament for a $135,400 guaranteed prize pool. In addition, there is a $64,000 Fischer Sweep prize for anyone who can repeat Bobby Fischer’s 1964 performance and win every game.
