U.S. Chess Championship – Round Seven

Shulman and Akobian deposed, new leaders emerging

New leaders have emerged on the top of the crosstable after 7th round of the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship concluded late Thursday. The defending champion GM Yuri Shulman and GM Varuzhan Akobian were dethroned after suffering defeats at the hands of GM Alexander Onischuk and GM Hikaru Nakamura respectively. The top seed Gata Kamsky and GM-elect Robert Hess are also in the premier four after adding new points with Black pieces.

14-years old star IM Ray Robson, who already beat three Grandmasters in the course of this Championship, was stopped by the local Missourian IM Michael Brooks. Brooks is on the good run to achieve his first GM norm. GM Jaan Ehlvest and IM Enrico Sevillano also joined the group of players holding 4 points each.

Top round eight matches are Gata Kamsky – Alexander Onischuk, Robert Hess – Yury Shulman and Michael Brooks – Hikaru Nakamura. Live games and commentary will be available on the official website. More videos on the ICC Blog.
